Crib Ordered!

Since we'll be headed to court in Ethiopia on April 24th (read Friday's post here in case you missed our big news!), we thought it might be time to order this sweet boy a crib!

I've always had my eye on the Jenny Lind Spindle Crib.  I love the simple, classic spindle design.  We ordered ours from amazon for a pretty good price.

Nursery Chandelier

A few months ago I e-mailed the fabulous Laurel-Dawn from Abode Love (seriously if you've never seen her blog, you MUST check her out!  SOOO talented!) to see if she could help me make some design decisions for our nursery.  She sweetly agreed and offered to do it at a discounted rate since we are adopting.

Well let me tell you, she has totally captured my vision and helped me with some BIG nursery decisions....like fabric, some wall art, and lighting!  Here is the fabulous chandelier that she picked out.  You can find it here on Overstock.  I originally thought I wanted a gold light fixture to go with the glam feel of the room.  She thought this one would be more substantial and tie in with some of the black accents we have planned.  Also, it just looks more masculine than a gold one!  And I couldn't agree more!

I ordered it from Overstock 2 days and there it was sitting on my front porch when I got home yesterday.  Now that's service!  We haven't unpacked it yet, but I'll be sure to take pictures of it hung in place.  I can't wait to hang this beaut!

Craigslist Dresser Revamp

Good morning, Wayman Family Nesters!  (at least I'm hoping for a good day!  By the time this posts, I'll be back to work after TWO WEEKS off! Yikes!  I better get back in the swing of things!  Don't get me wrong, I LOVE my students, but I'm not ready to be back!)

Today I'm going to show you a project for the nursery that the hubby and I  undertook for the nursery.  This past summer while perusing Craigslist, I found the PERFECT dresser for our little one's nursery.  I knew it was a little early to be making such purchases, but this one was just what I was looking for and a pretty good price.

Here's a before shot...

First, the hubby took all the drawers out and gave the exterior surfaces and drawer fronts a light sanding with a fine grit 150 sand paper.  Then, he primed it with an oil-based primer (original Kilz) we had tinted at Home Depot (per the instructions of our local friendly paint guy).  He sprayed all the surfaces (including inside and underneath the dresser) with the primer (the dresser smelled of smoke, so we were trying to get rid of that smell!).  He used a sprayer with his compressor for all of the painting.

Then the hubby sprayed 2 coats of paint (we chose Behr "Grape Creme."  I was going for a grayish-purplish color inspired from my all-time favorite nursery below:

The last thing he did was prime and paint the hardware.  Loved the beautiful original hardware!  Sorry for the bad iPhone picture, but it looks even better in person!

A big thank you to the hubby on this project!  It looks great and will be one of my favorite parts of the nursery!

Early Nursery Purchases

If you're already tired of hearing reading about my early nursery plans, stop reading this post right now!  If you're not tired of it, or are just tuning in, you can catch up by reading previous nursery posts here, here, and here.   I just love all things nursery, so here we go...

Here are a few items that I have already purchsed or been given so far.  I'm so excited! 

I ordered this map of Africa from amazon.com.  I definitely don't want to go overboard with an Africa theme, but I thought this would be a nice reminder of Hayes's heritage.

 Remember our online silent auction back in March?  Well everyone went crazy for this fabulous print.  Nadia was SO sweet and wanted to donate 3 prints: 2 for the auction and 1 for us to hang in our nusery.  So thoughtful of her!  Here's a link to her etsy shop if you want your own!

I ordered this little print from 1canoe2's etsy shop.  Tennesee pride!  Love it!

I picked up this gem from a local thrift store.  I heart globes!

I ordered these angel wings from a vintage store in New York.  I plan to hang them over a mirror that will hang behind the crib.  Right over our sleeping darling's head.

I picked up this adorable guy from the Zoo Gallery on our beach trip back in May.  The brand is Twoodles and each one is hand made.  I love the pop of color he'll bring to the space!

This item was hard to photograph, but it's a long strand of birds with a bell on the end.  I thought it would be cute hanging on the nursery door.

Here are a few frames I picked up from a local antique store.  I think the little boy sihouette is so cute!

My sweet mother-in-law gave me this frame for Mother's Day.  The phrase written on it is so perfect.  She always finds the sweetest gifts. 

I got this tray on sale at Target for $5.  I love the shimmer it has to it.  I'm going to put this on the dresser to hold lotions, cremes, and all that good baby stuff!

Another sweet gift from my mother-in-law is this adorable lion by blabla.  I think blabla has to be one of the cutest brands for kids.  Love their stuff.

And because every baby needs a binky blanket, I couldn't resist this sweet dog from a local gift store.  It is so soft!  Precious.

So there's the collection of items I've been saving up for months already.  I can't wait to find a place for them as the nursery starts to take shape.

American Pickers in Franklin

Ok, so we weren't actually WITH Mike and Frank, but we FELT like Mike and Frank!

About a month ago, the hubby's grandparents decided to downsize and move to a smaller home.  They would not be able to take everything from their current home in Franklin.  The hubby and I got to go pickin' at their house.  I felt like we were on American Pickers!

We had so much fun looking through all of their treasures and hearing the story behind each item we brought home.  Here are the items that we came home with...


How great is this clock?  I already have the perfect place for it, but you'll have to check back later this week to see where!

I LOVE books, especially old ones!  I chose 3 classics to eventually put in Hayes's room.  I chose Treasure Island, The Three Muskateers, and The Adventures of Tom Sawyer.  These three books are perfect for a little boy's room.  I love the faded red color.  They will be sure to add a pop of color to the nursery.

This assortment of little bottles caught my attention immediately!  They will look great in a windowsill with a sprig of flowers in them.

I thought that this wonderful fish plate trimmed in gold (I know it's hard to see it in the picture) would look great up on a shelf in little Hayes's room.  I was planning to use gold accents, so this is perfect!  Sort of tacky, I know,  but I LOVE it!

Another treasure that I snagged for Hayes's room was this Boy Scouts Handbook for Boys.  How great is this for a little boy's room?!

I thought that these adorable roosters would be perfect on the windowsill in our kitchen.  I thought they looked very Anthropologie-esque (Yes, I just made up my own adjective and I will continue using it!).  And get this, they were made by Christopher's great-grandmother!  How cool is that?!

This adorable print was knitted? (probably not the right term. I'm not really sure what it is-not much of a sewer at all!  But I like it!) by Christopher's aunt in 1974.  I thought it was way too cute to pass up!

I also thought that this fabulous ball with the butterfly (fake!) inside would be cute in Hayes's nursery.  I couldn't pass this up!

 Another amazing clock!  This is a tiny one.  Love the shape of the clock and the brassy color.  I thought that this would make another cute accent for the nursery.  If I HAD to choose my favorite item that we got, I would probably say this one.  I think it's beautiful!

I was so excited when Christopher's mom spied these jars of marbles.  Christopher's grandfather gave his sister some when our nephew Jack was born and I thought they were so cute.  Now none of you can say I have lost my marbles, because, in fact, I have not!

I spotted this milkbottle lamp in Christohper's grandparents' bedroom.  I raced to ask them if they were taking it to their new house and she was excited that I wanted it.  I love milkbottle glass, but sadly, have never bought any.  So this will have to be the first item in my collection!  I'll find the perfect place for it soon!

I have a slight obsession with birds (hence the blog title), so when I saw this, I snatched it up immediately.  It actually used to be a salt shaker.  It has three holes in its mouth.  It would have been a very large salt shaker!  I don't think I would have ever had to refill it!  I will just be using it as eye candy.

Here was one of the hubby's only picks.  He loves all things historic (as do I) and these bottles came from Nashville's Gerst Brewing Company.  They date back to the early to mid 1900's.  The hubby has requested that these be in his "man cave" when we get it fixed up for him.  I will oblige him on this request since he doesn't make many when it comes to our house.

The hubby's other pick is something pretty special.  This baseball bat belonged to his grandfather as a young teenager.  His grandfather told us that you were pretty lucky if you had a bat during that time.  So, when it broke, he simply taped it back together.  I know that the hubby felt honored that his grandfather gave it to him. 

It is so special to have items in our home that once belonged to his grandparents and even his great-grandparents.  Thank you Grandaddy and Grandma June!  We will treasure them always.
